An electronic-game framework for evaluating coevolutionary algorithms

چکیده
One of the common artificial intelligence applications in electronic games consists of making an artificial agent learn how to execute some determined task successfully in a game environment. One way to perform this task is through machine learning algorithms capable of learning the sequence of actions required to win in a given game environment. There are several supervised learning techniques able to learn the correct answer for a problem through examples. However, when learning how to play electronic games, the correct answer might only be known by the end of the game, after all the actions were already taken. Thus, not being possible to measure the accuracy of each individual action to be taken at each time step. A way for dealing with this problem is through Neuroevolution, a method which trains Artificial Neural Networks using evolutionary algorithms. In this article, we introduce a framework for testing optimization algorithms with artificial agent controllers in electronic games, called EvoMan, which is inspired in the action-platformer game Mega Man II. The environment can be configured to run in different experiment modes, as single evolution, coevolution and others. To demonstrate some challenges regarding the proposed platform, as initial experiments we applied Neuroevolution using Genetic Algorithms and the NEAT algorithm, in the context of competitively coevolving two distinct agents in this game. 1

Analyzing Cooperative Coevolution with Evolutionary Game Theory
The task of understanding coevolutionary algorithms is a very difficult one. These algorithms search landscapes which are in some sense adaptive. As a result, the dynamical behaviors of coevolutionary systems can frequently be even more complex than traditional evolutionary algorithms (EAs). Moreover, traditional EA theory tells us little about coevolutionary algorithms. One major question that...
متن کاملGame Theory Based Coevolutionary Algorithm: A New Computational Coevolutionary Approach
Game theory is a method of mathematical analysis developed to study the decision making process. In 1928, Von Neumann mathematically proved that every two-person, zerosum game with many pure finite strategies for each player is deterministic. In the early 50's, Nash presented another concept as the basis for a generalization of Von Neumann’s theorem. Another central achievement of game theory i...
متن کاملA model of brand competition for durable goods supply chains in a dynamic framework
Game theory is an efficient tool to represent and conceptualize the problems concerning conflict and competition. In recent years and especially for durable products, competition between domestic and foreign brands for gaining market share has received a considerable attention. This paper study electronic commerce concepts by differential game theory and introduce a novel and comprehensive mode...
متن کاملA Mathematical Framework for the Study of Coevolution
Despite achieving compelling results in engineering and optimization problems, coevolutionary algorithms remain difficult to understand, with most knowledge to date coming from practical successes and failures, not from theoretical understanding. Thus, explaining why coevolution succeeds is still more art than science. In this paper, we present a theoretical framework for studying coevolution b...
متن کاملHall-of-fame Competitive Coevolutionary Algorithms for Optimizing Opponent Strategies in a New Game
This paper describes the application of competitive coevolution as a mechanism of self learning in a two-player real time strategy (RTS) game. The paper presents this (war) RTS game, developed by the authors as an open-source tool, and describes its (built-in) coevolutionary engine developed to find winning strategies. This engine applies a competitive coevolutionary algorithm that uses the con...
